MAFF Establishes Food Self-Sufficiency Enhancement Council

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) initiated establishment of Food Self-Sufficiency Enhancement Council which held its first meeting in Tokyo on April 26, whose task is to tackle problems in a joint public and private sector endeavor in raising the food self-sufficiency ratio of the country. The launching of the council is based on the new Basic Plan for Food, Agriculture and Rural Areas of which one of the goals is to raise the food self-sufficiency ratio from the present level of 40% to 45%. Its concrete action programs will be formulated at the end of May this year.

The council consists of agricultural organizations, consumers' organizations, food industry business, National Governors' Association (NGA), Japan Association of City Mayors (JACM), National Association of Towns & Villages (NATV) and learned persons. The council will come up with targets with numerical indications for respective entities belonging to the above category of organizations. Mr. Yoshinobu Shimamura, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries expressed his hope at the first meeting saying, "I have a great expectation on the work of this council so that its efforts would result in activating the potentials which agriculture and rural areas have to their maximum possible extent in achieving the goal".
