Joint Public and Private Sector Export Promotion Council to Double Food Exports
Council for the Promotion of Export of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Products was established on April 27. It aims at increased exportation of agricultural, forestry and fisheries products in their joint efforts of public and private sectors under the banner, "From Defence to Offence". Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who has a strong interest in seeing export development of these commodities, attended its founding meeting in Tokyo and infused challengers' spirit to attendants saying, "Japan' s food products from its agriculture, forestry and fisheries have a good chance of exportation thanks to their taste in spite of high prices. Agriculture is an industry with a high potential for development."
The founding general assembly has confirmed that it should be their target to increase export from the present 30 billion yen to double within the next five years to 2009. It decided to make a joint effort by the parties involved in such activities as the marketing and appealing of the Japan Brand.
The general assembly elected Mr. Yoshinobu Shimamura, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as its honorary president and Dr. Shosaburo Kimura, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo as its president.
