Action Program Now in Place for Doubling of Agricultural Export

On June 30, the Council for the Promotion of Export of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries Products adopted an action program for the fiscal 2005 - the first step toward doubling of agricultural export by joint government-private sector efforts within five years. The program includes plans to open a permanent sale corner in departmental stores in Bangkok, Thailand and at four other places overseas. A special campaign mark will be designed by the end of August to be used at such sales corners as well as at trade fairs to make publicity of agricultural products made in Japan.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) put up a target of 600 billion Japanese yen in the value of exportation of agricultural, forestry and fisheries products to be achieved within five years, doubling it from present level of 300 billion yen. The target was incorporated in the schedule of implementation of the new Basic Plan for Food, Agriculture and Rural Areas decided by the cabinet meeting in March. Sale corners are to be opened, starting in August in Bangkok, followed by ones at Tai-pei, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong in September. Goods will be displayed also at overseas trade fairs in collaboration with MAFF, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and prefecuture governments.

Campaign mark will be created to take advantage of Japanese foods boom around the world and to let Japan brand take deeper root, for publicity efforts by individual business entities might only see limited effect.

MAFF also plans to hold export promotion seminars at nine different places in the country starting this autumn. Participants will be given information on the quarantine system, state of protection of new vareity breeders' rights and reigstered trade marks on the land of export outlet. The seminar will, at the same time, work on examples of export development, which will be later publicised for willing producers through internet home page.
