The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), on October 7, announced its intention to work out a target volume of 2006 rice crop production of the country with a ceiling of 8.44 million tons on husked basis. The production target will be finalized during the month of November. Volume of production target is set with a forecast demand as a major determinant. According to the most up-to-date data, demand for 2006/07 year was calculated at 8.44 million tons, down 20,000 tons from the initial forecast.
The 2006 production target compares with the 2005 target volume of 8.51 million tons. "Depending on how the supply of 2005 rice crop will finally turn out, 2006 target figure could be further reduced from 8.44 million tons," said MAFF's Rice Policy Planning Division.
