Reorganization Plan of MAFF for Fiscal 2006

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) announced an outline of its reorganization plan which will be implemented following the finalized government budget plan for fiscal 2006.

Reorganization will take place in two stages. The first set of reorganization is due in April 2006 mainly involving its Statistics and Information Center. The center has offices at 266 places over the country and that will be reduced to 176 offices. Compilation of the result of surveys will now be handled by the District Agriculture Offices.

In August 2006, International Economic Affairs Division, International Trade Policy Coordination Division and International Trade and Tariff Division -- all under the International Affairs Department of Minister's Secretariat -- will be abolished, and a new International Economic Affairs Division (tentative name) will be created to cope with negotiations under the World Trade Organization and so forth. The new Division will embrace two Minister's Secretariat Counsellors (International Affairs), and nine international negotiating officers.

Food Safety and Consumer Affairs Bureau will abolish the International Affairs Office under Food Safety and Consumer Policy Division, and create an international standards division to deal with matters relating to international agreements on sanitary and phyto-sanitary affairs.

Forestry Agency will create a Wood Products Use Division to expand the use of timbers. The present Wood Products Division will be renamed as the Wood Industry Division, which will deal with structural reform of wood industry.
