Kyoto University Discovers a Gene for eMarblingf of Beef

The research group headed by professor emeritus Yoshiyuki Sasaki of the Kyoto University discovered a gene that determines the extent of marbling in beef, and publicized it at the meeting of Japanese Society of Animal Science held on March 31. The discovery will be of great help for efficient production in the future because which beef breeds are more promising in terms of producing marbled beef is rather an easy telling to do ahead of actual start of feeding.

The causal gene discovered by the research group this time is 'EDG1.' It is known for its function to promote extension of blood vessel of humans. Comparative studies of black-haired Japanese Wagyu breed and Holstein breed confirmed that the slight difference in the base arrays between them determines the different degrees of marbling.

It is conjectured that there are other causal genes for marbling so that the mechanism of marbling has not been fully elucidated. Professor emiritus Sasaki says "We look forward to making second and third discoveries and also look forward to promoting research in joint undertakings with business firms."
