Japan to Propagate Japanese-Style Diet the World Over

The Japanese government's Intellectual Property Policy Headquarters finalized on June 8 'the Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2006' which aims to enhance international competitive capacity of Japanese industries. Under the pillar 'the Building a Culture Creating Nation' put forward along with pillars 'Countermeasures against Fake Products' and 'Reform of Patent Application System and Realization of Global Patent,' the 2006 plan names the Japanese style of life such as the Japanese diets 'the Japanese Brand,' and envisages to propagate it overseas by sending Safety and Peace of Mind about Food Caravans.

The government's Intellectual Property Policy Headquarters was set up in March 2003 comprising cabinet ministers and learned persons under the initiative of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi who has an idea that intellectual property strategy is a state priority. This is the fourth of annual promotion plans, and it pushes reinforcement of and support to research and development at universities etc. as well as strengthens measures to prevent propagation of counterfeits or pirated copies in overseas markets.

As regards the promotion of 'the Japanese Brand' strategy based on Japanese life style, it aims to double the size of population who eat Japanese diets. As a concrete step to achieve this aim, the government will send for the first time 'Safety and Peace of Mind about Food Caravans' overseas. The caravans will hold cooking classes and further propagate Japanese diets and Japanese food ingredients that are safe, secure and healthy.

In the field of agriculture, the Intellectual Property Policy Headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will work as the central promoter of the plan to reinforce protection of new plant varieties and to study ways of protecting genetic resources of livestock such as Wagyu [Japanese cattle].
