Demand for 2007 Crop of Rice Forecast at 8. 35 Million Tons

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) convened a meeting of the Stable Foods Sub-Committee of the Council on Food, Agriculture and Rural Area Policies on July 31 and finalized basic guidelines on demand and supply and prices of rice. The guidelines set the level of national demand for rice at 8.35 million tons (on preliminary forecast basis, and expressed in terms of husked brown rice), which eventually means the production level of 2007 crop. This represents 90,000 tons less than the previous season level, a reflection of a declining trend in rice consumption.

As from the 2007 crop of rice, MAFF will cease to allocate target volume of production as the production adjustment will be shifted in the hands of producers and agricultural organizations. The 8.35 million tons will be eventually the base for country-wide production adjustment (target) of 2007 crop. The figure will be finalized in November after taking account of the demand and supply situation such as 2006 crop status etc.

For the previous season, the forecast of demand for 2006/07 was 8.44 million tons. The production target for 2006 crop was set at 8.33 million tons taking account of changes in demand and supply situation.
