WTO Confirms the Freezing of Multilateral Trade Negotiations

The World Trade Organization (WTO) confirmed at its informal plenary meeting of the Trade Negotiations Committee on July 24 to suspend the Doha Round trade negotiations in general including one on agriculture. The conclusion to suspend the negotiations came after talks among ministers of G6, the six leading countries/region broke down. WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy told the heads of delegations at the informal meeting that the conclusion of the round by this year's end is not possible.

At the outset of the meeting, the Director-General said that the negotiations are in serious difficulty and that without modalities established on agriculture and non-agricultural market access, it will not be possible to bring the negotiations to a conclusion by the end of the year, suggesting a virtual failure to see a deal within the year.

No time schedule ahead was discussed at the meeting, leaving the question unclear of when and how the negotiations will resume.

The Director-General reported the freeze of the Doha Round trade negotiations to all member countries at the meeting of WTO General Council held on July 27. While the General Council did not make any decision on the matter, there was no objection raised from any members.
