Self-sufficiency Ratio of Lumber Recovers to 20%
Forestry Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries publicized on September 30 that the country's self-sufficiency ratio of lumber registered 20.0% for the year 2005, which is an increase of 1.6% over the previous year. It is for the first time in 7 years since 1998 that the ratio hit the order of 20%.
Import from China decreased by 6.2% year on year against the backdrop of expanding domestic demand and stronger control of cutting over in that country. Meanwhile, domestic Japanese lumber production increased by 3.8% over the previous year as the use of domestic lumber in production of plywood for flooring and of laminated lumber for poles increased.
The outlook of self-sufficiency ratio of lumber for FY2006 is set at 20.2%. The agency sees that "the self-sufficiency ratio might rise as the use of domestic lumber in making plywood and laminated lumber will likely increase in the future." (Policy Planning Division)
