70% of Japanese Feel Uneasy About Low Self-sufficiency Ratio in Foods
The cabinet office publicized on December 21, 2006 the result of public opinion survey of 2006 on food supply in Japan. The survey result revealed that 47.0% of the respondents felt the present food self-sufficiency ratio of 40% "low," and 23.1% felt it "rather low." These two figures summed up amounts to 70.1% and that represents a hike of 17.3% compared to a survey 6 years ago.
58.2% of the respondents feel that the food self-sufficiency ratio should desirably be higher than 60%. In answer to another question, more than 80% of the respondents showed they wanted to see food supplies originating from domestic production. These figures show the sense of insecurity Japanese people have on the current food supply regime with heavy supplies coming from overseas sources.
A combined responses which say either "I feel very uneasy" or "I feel somewhat uneasy" make up 76.7% of the respondents. This is the same percentage as the last survey. 61.6% cited a possibility of food import either reduced or halted due to changes in international circumstances as a cause of insecurity.
