Norihiko Akagi is Named as New Agriculture Minister

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appointed Mr. Norihiko Akagi, a member of the House of Representatives, as a new Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on June 1 to replace late Toshikatsu Matsuoka. As the World Trade Organization (WTO) agricultural negotiations are in the last stage, Prime Minister Abe determined that Mr. Akagi was most appropriate for the position based on the fact that he was familiar with the agricultural and forestry administration and possessed adaptable fighting potential. At the Prime Minister's official residence, Mr. Akagi expressed his intention to be committed to the mounting tasks, saying that he would push forward the agricultural and forestry administration with keeping Matsuoka's regrets in mind.

Mr. Akagi, 48 years old, was graduated from the University of Tokyo (Faculty of Law) in 1983. He has been elected to the member of House of Representatives six times, and worked as Counsellor for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Parliamentary Secretary for Internal Affairs and Communications, Director for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Division for Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Senior Vice Minister for Defense Agency, and Deputy Chairman for Policy Research Council for LDP.
