JA Group Sends Experts to Thailand to Train in Life Improvement and Marketing as Cooperation between Agricultural Cooperatives based on EPA
As a part of cooperation between agricultural cooperatives based on Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), JA Group sent the first group of experts to Thailand on May 6 that would train people there in the promotion of agricultural cooperatives. The experts, who retired from JAs, provide training in agricultural products marketing and life improvement.
Thailand faces a major political issue of poverty elimination in rural areas, and focuses on the increase in income mainly through "one village, one product" movement. Enhancement of the cooperatives' functions holds an important key to it. Training in marketing and life improvement was requested by the Thailand side. JA Group recruits the trainers out of its executives and employees, and sends them to Thailand through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Nobumasa Okamoto, 58 years old, will offer training in marketing for two months. Okamoto worked for JA Onomichi-city in Hiroshima Prefecture. Tetsu Takahashi, 57 years old, is expected to train in improvement of life for three months. Takahashi was an employee at JA Iwate Hanamaki in Iwate Prefecture.
According to JA-ZENCHU, agricultural cooperatives in Thailand are poor at price negotiations with distributors, which partly have brought about low farm income. Thailand is expected to make use of Japan's know-how to build a partnership between JAs and wholesalers for promotion of producing areas. Thailand had no experience of and strongly requested the support for, training in life improvement that included fostering of women's groups, establishment and operation of farm stands, and life planning.
JA Group plans to send other experts after June in the fields including product development, development of main producing areas, and financial management for agricultural cooperatives.
