Hayashi Become New Chairman for a Council of Agricultural Policy, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

Dr. Yoshihiro Hayashi, a professor at Graduate School of the University of Tokyo, was appointed Chairman of the Council for Food, Agriculture and Rural Area Policies of MAFF on July 12. At the accession to office, Dr. Hayashi said, "Food self-sufficiency has become an international issue, and is important so as not to cause hardship for the least less-developed countries. We have to support agriculture with robust structure, community-based group farming," with taking into consideration the rise in the international price of grains partly due to increased production of bio-fuel.

The council is comprised of 20 members including 16 newly appointed ones, who are experts in food industry, economy and environment. Nine committees were established under the control of the council.
