Strategic Council Discusses Food Situation
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries held a meeting on July 17 for "Strategic Food Council" at the Prime Minister's official residence. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who attended the first meeting of the council, told that it was the mission of his administration to continuously ensure the stable supply of foods in the future. He also stressed the importance of the "robust agricultural industry", his pet theory, for the stable supply, saying that aggressive efforts, instead of keeping the status quo, should open the way to the future for the agriculture.
The council, which is chaired by Dr. Shinichi Shogenji, a professor at Graduate School of the University of Tokyo, is comprised of 10 members including a scholar, consumer representative and television talent. The subject of the first session was the food situation in Japan. The ministry also aims at the increased awareness of food issue among Japanese people through a broad-ranging discussion at the session, and plans to present a conclusion in "a form of brief message" within the current fiscal year.
Ms. Mayuko Takada, an actress, insisted that people had to share the perception that the foods were important while pointing out the fact that many foods were thrown into trashcan. Ms. Hiroko Kiba, a broadcaster, told that more efforts had to be put into on disseminating advantages of "Chisan-chisho", or local production for local consumption , that resulted in environmental considerations through improvement in food self-sufficiency and/or shortened transportation.
