Liaison Conference Presenting Direction of Beautiful Forests

Japanese government decided before July 11 the details of "National Movement to Create Beautiful Forests" where the government hand-in-hand with the private sector will push forward the maintenance and conservation of forests that absorb carbon dioxide. Eight ministries and offices including Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will work together to promote the use of envelopes, printing paper, office desks and so on made with wood from thinned forests. They will also cooperate with "National Committee for the Promotion of Creating Beautiful Forests" composed of private groups, and will support the establishment of organizations that conduct activities at rural areas.

A liaison conference, consisting mainly of director-generals from relevant ministries and offices, developed concrete measures to be conducted after July by ministries and offices. The measures include active use of domestic lumbers and thinnings for the construction of buildings and facilities as well as encouragement of education and enlightenment on forest conservation activities for a private sector.

The National Committee, on the other hand, makes suggestions on people's livelihood that uses domestic lumbers, and advances volunteer activities for forestation. It consists of 49 groups and organizations including farmer group, consumer group, business group, voluntary group that works to conserve forests, and federation of local governments.

JA-ZENCHU, Zen-noh, National Chamber of Agriculture, and Japan Livestock Industry Association, all are a member of the committee, declared that they would encourage residents at mountain areas to maintain forest they owned, would use business cards and envelops made from thinnings, and would publicize "creation of beautiful forests" through their publications.
