MAFF to Support Food Industry's Expansion into East Asia
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will start Center to Support Overseas Operations of Food Industry@on October 10 2007 in Tokyo in order to accelerate the operation overseas of the Japanese food industry into East Asian countries. The center is expected to increase number of overseas subsidiaries of Japanese companies by providing local information, personalized consultation, seminars and other support for businesses that work to make investment in, or expand operations into, East Asian countries.
"East Asian Food Industry Revitalization Strategy", which the ministry announced in December 2006 and serves as a basis for the establishment of the center, aims at the increased international competitiveness of, and development of a new export market for, the food industry in Japan.
The center is to be located in Japan Food Industry Center in Minato-ku, Tokyo that was established by the food industry, and to be operated under the cooperation among MAFF, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), JFIC and other organizations. Its objectives include the increase in sales for the overseas subsidiaries by FY 2010 by 30 to 50% from FY 2007.
Working with JETRO offices in Beijing, Singapore and other three major cities, the center will collect information on local dietary practices, operations of overseas companies in the countries and their performance, food law and system, and other issues. Staff at the center will serve as an "expert adviser" to offer personalized consultation and information for free. In the meantime, it expects to give support mainly to food manufacturers.
